Aventura Marketing Council/Chamber of Commerce welcomes back David Whitaker, new President & CEO, Gr. Miami Convention & Visitors Bureau

City of Sunny Isles Beach and Sunny Isles Beach Tourism & Mktg. Council host meeting

At a recent Aventura Marketing Council/Chamber of Commerce Breakfast Meeting at the Hilton Aventura, President & CEO of the Greater Miami Convention & Visitors Bureau (GMCVB) David Whitaker gave an uplifting report on the state of tourism for Miami-Dade County.

Meeting hosts Sunny Isles Beach Mayor Dana Goldman and Ibis Romero, Executive Director of the Sunny Isles Beach Tourism & Marketing Council, each gave great updates on their organizations. Mayor Goldman spoke about the wonderful new additions to the City, including Gateway Center, a new 15,000 square foot state-of-the-art facility built specifically for the usage and enjoyment of residents.

She spoke passionately about her interest in helping the small businesses thrive and connecting people. Romero, celebrating over 15 years as Executive Director of the Sunny Isles Beach Tourism & Marketing Council , focus is on branding and promoting Sunny Isles Beach. She liaisons between the City and the GMCVB, organizes the annual Jazz Festival in Sunny Isles Beach and supervises the Visitor Center.

Former GMCVB President & CEO Bill Talbert, who has remained with the organizations to assist with the transition, was there to introduce his successor, David Whitaker with glowing remarks about his expertise, leadership and accessibility. Whitaker had previously served as Executive Vice President and Chief Marketing Officer from 1990 to 2207 of the GMCVB before moving to Toronto, Ontario to become President & CEO of Destination Toronto. He served in that same position for the past five years with Choose Chicago.

Whitaker said, “Having a chance to gather again with such a wonderful group of partners is just so meaningful. And never a more important time to recommit ourselves and our focus to the core principles of customer service, storytelling and collaboration. These will be our key drivers that will continue to fuel our recovery and reattain our seat as the top destination to visit.” He added, “I have the privilege of following in the footsteps of two extraordinary mentors and leaders—Merrett Stierheim and Bill Talbert. I will be joining an incredible team with a long history and decades of promotion from Greater Miami and Miami Beach as one of the most characteristic and desired brands in the world.”

This will be an array of music, arts, culture and culinary offerings with Friday night movies, Saturday evening headlining concerts and a Sunday dine-around. And that’s just Miami Beach! There are dozens of major events and activities happening throughout the county in March, from Calle Ocho’s Carnaval Mami, Jazz in the Garden, the Miami Open presented by Itau to the Winter Party Festival.

The GMCVB’s Travel Industry Sales Team attends nationwide travel showcases to meet one-on-one with top travel service representatives from a variety of destinations, major cruise lines, railway, tour companies, theme parks and attractions. Their Communications Team hosts national and international authors, editors-in-chief and destination publications and hosts visiting press from around the world.
